PhD Research

Why the Open University for my research degree?

There are over 1200 postgraduate research students currently studying with the OU across the globe, working on a wide range of projects.

The OU’s degrees meet rigorous academic standards, so OU qualifications are recognised and renowned throughout the world, valued by your employers, your profession and your peers. You will develop a keen understanding of research methodology and skills, supported by a team of experienced supervisors.

Our research degrees are led by expert academics who contribute to both teaching and research, ensuring that you secure qualifications relevant to the professional demands of our changing world.

Our research engages with some of the major issues facing the world today. It seeks to inform public opinion and policy, and promote debate and engagement with those issues.

Full-time study

There are over 250 full-time students working on research projects at the University’s campus in Milton Keynes. You will also be able to enjoy one of the newest and greenest towns in the UK and get access, in person, to our vast library facilities.

Some studentships are provided by the University, others by UK research councils and funding agencies.

Residence requirements

Full-time students are required to live within 15 miles of Walton Hall, Milton Keynes, although exceptions can be made with approval.

Part-time study

Studying part time may be more convenient for you as it is easier to balance your studies with work and family commitments. However, this will be challenging. You should expect a part-time research degree to require at least 16 hours a week and it will take you at least twice as long as full-time study.

You will still have full access to our learning resources.

Affiliated Research Centres

Some students are registered for Open University research degrees at Affiliated Research Centres – leading research institutions with whom we work in partnership.

Entry requirements and how to apply

The normal minimum entrance requirement is an upper second class honours degree or masters degree, relevant to the proposed area of study, from a recognised higher education institution in the UK. You should also have experience of academic research in the previous four years, normally in the form of either a masters degree in research methods, an undergraduate degree with a research element in the final year, or work-related experience with evidence through research reports.  If you have a qualification from outside the UK, or you’re not sure if you meet the entry requirements, please contact us (research-degrees-team@open.ac.uk).

At PhD graduation ceremony, Paris, Catherine Xiang explains why study with the OU is so rewarding.
