Hi,
I´m new to the OU and I´ve started looking through the course material for E301. The study guide for the first section gives us reading from the course book but it doesn´t tell us what to read from the book we had to buy, by Ronald Carter. So I´m not sure how I´m supposed to read this book.
Thanks in advance,
Vicky

Hi Vicky, once your course starts your tutor will be able to answer all your questions and you´ll be guided through how and when to use all the material. When I did a course with the OU I used the weeks before the course started just to skim-read some of the course material and set texts, just to get a flavour of what I´d be doing.
Good luck with your studies. Looks like a really interesting course.

Hi Vicky,
Jane is absolutely right. Once the website opens and the course gets started all will be clear as your study calendar will tell you week by week what the recommended readings are. It´s great that you´re all ready to go though!
On the Carter book I would just say that we dip in and out so there´s no need to rush headlong into it as it can be a bit of a daunting start without the supporting materials and course book to steer you through. Chapter 1 does provide a good introduction, though, so do take a look at that. My suggestion to you is that you get familiar with the resources you have - take a look at the book and the DVD material for Chapter 1 for example, but really we haven´t started yet and once the website is open, believe me, you will have plenty to do!
Your tutor details will be with you very shortly and she/he will be very happy to answer any queries once the course gets underway and, of course, there will be your tutor group forum and the national forum for you to exchange messages with fellow students on the course - and it is the tutor group forum that you will probably find most useful as your own tutor will be making use of that. There´s also an enormous amount of supporting material to help you more generally with your studies and you might want to take a look at that. It´s unusual to start with a Level 3 course so I hope you have been advised about that too. If not, you should, perhaps, contact your regional office as if this isn´t the most appropriate course for you they will advise you about how you can switch before the start date, which is always much less troublesome!
All the best,
Frank
