I started K101 in February, finishing in October. I am enjoying the learning and finding out new things (even though I work in social care allready). I would by a memory stick for your computer (if you haven't allready)as I have heard of a few people so far who have had problems with their computers and lost all of their saved coursework. At the moment I am going to aim for the diploma in Health and Social Care, and perhaps in the future go for the degree.

Hi Leanne,

I'm also started K101 in October, feeling a bit nervous but can't wait to get started. At the moment I'm a full time mum to my two girls but I'm hoping to use this course to get me onto a social work degree course at uni.

Buy an external hard drive, invaluable. Not only to save course work, but if you get a certain software you can back up your entire hard drive with them.

Hiya, i too am also starting this course in the coming weeks. i received my course materials this week and am trying to get to grips with the forums. Im a young mum of one, i also seem to end up looking after everyone else's kids so trying to imagine when im going to find the time to fit this all in is giving me a bit of a headache!

Im aiming for a B.a in health and social care (pref with Hons) i am also looking at doing Doula training along side my ou studies.

Liz Sandilands - Sat, 19/09/2009 - 20:19

Just recieved all the bumpf in the post today, assessment guide, study calender, books etc. At first glance I was a little overwhelmed, it seems such alot to take in from an introductory course. I am going to download my templates from the course website and just check out what kind of language the course work will be laid out in. I am in advertising at the minute and have a 14 year old son. I am looking to get a degree eventually in some kind of social care, I am not looking to be a "social worker" however. I would like to be a project worker in maybe womens services. Anyway good luck to everyone, I will be on here sometimes to maybe get a few tips, I haven't studied in 20+ years!!

amy.x. - Fri, 09/10/2009 - 14:24

Hi everyone, my name is Amy and i have just started K101 too! I'm new to the OU and it all seems a bit daunting at the moment; not really sure how to start my essay, i have loads of ideas floating round in my head but i'm not really sure how to get them on paper!
I'm hoping everything will just fall into place.

Chloe Ward - Fri, 08/01/2010 - 16:40

Hi all

I have not been on for some time and found this thread and decided I could help share my experience of K101 as I have just completed it.

K101 covered quite a few different topics, from how places, such as hospitals, care homes and your own home, effect people to recognising illness and its implications. There were so many topics and each was very interesting and informative.

I found the course materials were set out quite well and were easy to understand and also liked the CD Roms that go in the PC with the movies on and other stuff. The course materials are of very high quality.

I had never done an essay before I did K101 and was certainly nervous at the thought of what marks I would get or even if I would be able to do it at all but in the end managed to do it and got a better mark than I thought I would get which then spurred me on to carry on with them.

The exam, once I had sat down to it and had started to put the answers, was not as bad as I thought and the invigilator was brilliant - really friendly and helpful in general. That three hours really goes fast once you get started! Basically, the exam is three essay-styled answers - one per hour. In these essay-styled answers, you have to relate your answers to the course materials and also case studies.

I really enjoyed the course and have now passed it.

Hope this helps.

Hello there everyone

I am just beginning the K101 course with the OU and am trying to navigate my way around the course materials, website and forum.

I am both excited and nervous at the same time!  I'm hoping to be accepted onto a paediatric nursing course in September 2011.  This would be a complete change of career for me, as I have been teaching dance and fitness classes for many years.

It will be great to be in contact with others studying the same course and facing the same challenges.

Happy studying

Erica

Hi Everyone, I've just started K101 In Oct. Finding it really enjoyable and was pleased to pass my first assessment. Not too sure on the computing side of things but my daughter is showing me how to work it so I'm getting there slowly. I got an email from my tutor to say he had posted an activity for unit 2 on the tutor group forum but can't seem to find it. Does anyone know where I can find this forum? Hope all is well with everyone.

Terry
