My top five Christmas gifts for OU students...

IT’S CHRIIIIISSSSMMMAAASSS!! Nearly. So when it comes to presents, what do you buy for the typical OU student? Well it’s easy to trawl the internet and find gifts for students but they’re all so ‘teenage student’ and us OU students are far too mature and intelligent for beer can baseball hats and USB timewaster toys (well, debatable really).

So here’s my top five gift ideas for OU students (disclaimer: really it’s just a list of things I think are pretty cool and would love someone to buy me!)

Christmas bauble with mini people attached to it

1.Duracell 3 hour mobile phone charger
I must own the worst smart phone in the entire world for battery longevity, I’m lucky if the charge lasts me 12 hours so an emergency power source would be excellent if I found myself in a sticky spot and desperately needed the use of my phone.

2.Super intelligent mathematical clock
A quirky wall clock for us intelligent OU types. Outsmart your friends with mathematical equations to work out in order to tell the time.

3.Ye Olde Laptop
I love this, it’s just a notebook. You know, one of those things full of plain paper (sliced up trees) to write on like we used before laptops were invented? But it has 1970s-style laptop on the front; an indication of your dedication to the dying art of writing, with a pencil (you know, one of those wooden things with a stick of lead through the middle).

4.Corrected grammar hoody
This hoody is me personified in clothing form. I do what it says constantly and get picked on frequently by my friends for it. I can’t help it. I blame my dad for always correcting me from ‘me and so-and-so’ to ‘so-and-so and I’. Correct me often enough and it sticks.

5.Buy a brain cell
A more serious gift, but how about buying a brain cell? Honestly, the cost of the gift is actually a donation to Alzheimer’s, Parkinson’s, Meningitis and Cancer Research charities so you really are helping save a brain cell. I like the idea of supporting a charity in a quirky way like this and let’s face it, it’s better than getting a frivolous present I’ll never use.

Of course, if none of these things tickle your fancy you could always get something from the fantastic range of OU branded goods we sell at OUSA and wear your university’s colours with pride. I personally have hoodies, an OU necklace, pens, a teddy bear, a business card case and a t-shirt. However there’s always room for an OU scarf...

Very true about there been very few things aimed at 'mature' students - not that I'd ever call myself mature I was very bemused when I ordered my study planner in September and found a list of washing instructions in the back (actually very handy!) and a reminder of what constitutes one of your 'five a day'. Bless.

I need that Platform bauble. NEED!

Na I'm not mature either, I'm just a bit fatter and wrinklier than your average 18 year old student.

I found the 5 a day listings in our planner very useful, I had no idea what food was until I got it *rolls eyes*. Do they think we were born yesterday or what?! Oh right... Yeah, don't answer that. I might cry.

Like the hoody - I also have to stop myself correcting other people's grammar (not yours, of course).  But I think I would rather have one of the tee-shirts (no prizes for guessing what colour).

About Carrie Walton

I dropped out of school at 17, halfway through my A Levels and got a job. I’ve worked full time ever since, but when I reached 23 I enrolled with the OU and started on a journey towards the degree I’d never stopped wanting. In 2009 and aged 29  I realised  I didn’t want my journey to end and formulated a new plan which includes a masters, a PhD, research and whatever else I might be able to cram into a journey now held under the umbrella term “lifelong learning and ongoing self-improvement”.

I finished my BSc (hons) Open in December 2011 by which time I'd already started on an MA in Social Science research at Durham University with a view to doing a doctorate in the not too distant future.  The OU isn’t getting rid of me that easy though, I've already signed up for a BSc (hons) in Criminology and Psychological Studies and I plan to keep studying with them for as long as grey matter will allow me to, it’s all part of my never ending lifelong learning path.

Alongside studying, I work full time for a building contractor in the North East of England as a Liaison Manager. Working is a means of affording and appreciating the things I really enjoy; mountain biking, hiking, theatre, gigs, cinema, eating out, writing, the list could go on, I just like doing things. In whatever spare time I can muster after that,  I volunteer for OUSA and am a school governor.

My name is Caz (or Carrie) and this is my journey from dogsbody to doctorate…
