Carrie on Christmas

T’is the lead-up to Christmas and I wish I could say

That I’m fully up to date t’wards my next TMA

I´ll need to work socks off to keep up to speed

So by Santa’s due date, my inner glutton I can feed!

Don´t want to be lumbered on Christmas Eve’s night

With books still piled high,  I don’t want them in sight!

This recent snowy spell has been the opportunity

To stay in the house and crack on with study.

But oh no no no, Caz likes to play out

Watch me make snow angels you’d swear I was 12 no doubt!

But a grown up I must be, sensible I must act

I must stay in the house and with myself make a pact.

I must get out my books, journals, pens and paper

And continue with study (in this weather it’s safer!)

Avoiding the temptation of Crimbly films on telly

And the irresistible lure of filling my belly...

With mince pies and trifle, crackers and cheese,

My sister-in-law’s rocky road (best in’t world, oh yes please!)

SNAP OUT OF IT CARRIE, CONCENTRATE LASS!!

If you don’t get this TMA done, you never will pass!

And where will that leave you, what chance will you stand?

Of reaching graduation and shaking the presiding officer’s hand

That feeling of pride as you stroll across stage

You never know, if you’re lucky you’ll do it at The Sage.

I really love dreaming of my graduation day

I’d look at my parents and with welled up eyes I’d say

“I told you I’d do it, for once I didn’t fail”

Tho’ I know some have doubted - expected me to bail.

I want to get there, reach my goal, I really truly do

So I suppose I’d better get on with it, and bid you adieu.

I wish you all a Merry Christmas and very best wishes for a prosperous and eventful 2011.

As I said to you last week I absolutely love it. You have a real talent for poetry and you should keep writing it. It evokes real emotions be that happy or sad it has everything.

Happy Christmas...give yourself a TMA break over the turkey, at least!

I'm in the slightly unfortunate position that while I'm now off work until the 4th January, my other half only gets the bare minimum off so I have a lot of days to fill in.  So I plan to get some reading done, some studying done, some writing done and a bit of work done in the house.

Boring, but sometimes it's really nice just being able to please yourself and indulge in the things you don't always get time to do normally.

Have a great one everyone, hope to see you all again in the New Year xxx

About Carrie Walton

I dropped out of school at 17, halfway through my A Levels and got a job. I’ve worked full time ever since, but when I reached 23 I enrolled with the OU and started on a journey towards the degree I’d never stopped wanting. In 2009 and aged 29  I realised  I didn’t want my journey to end and formulated a new plan which includes a masters, a PhD, research and whatever else I might be able to cram into a journey now held under the umbrella term “lifelong learning and ongoing self-improvement”.

I finished my BSc (hons) Open in December 2011 by which time I'd already started on an MA in Social Science research at Durham University with a view to doing a doctorate in the not too distant future.  The OU isn’t getting rid of me that easy though, I've already signed up for a BSc (hons) in Criminology and Psychological Studies and I plan to keep studying with them for as long as grey matter will allow me to, it’s all part of my never ending lifelong learning path.

Alongside studying, I work full time for a building contractor in the North East of England as a Liaison Manager. Working is a means of affording and appreciating the things I really enjoy; mountain biking, hiking, theatre, gigs, cinema, eating out, writing, the list could go on, I just like doing things. In whatever spare time I can muster after that,  I volunteer for OUSA and am a school governor.

My name is Caz (or Carrie) and this is my journey from dogsbody to doctorate…
