Professional biography

Dr. Josmario Albuquerque is a Research Associate in Learning Analytics at the Institute of Educational Technology (IET), The Open University, UK. His work is dedicated to using data analytics and AI for enhancing learning experiences and for addressing pressing social challenges with the aim to create more equitable and inclusive learning environments. His current projects explore the application of Learning Analytics and Artificial Intelligence (AI) to the analysis of large educational datasets. During his PhD, he focused on using AI to understand and uncover inter-group bias in educational resources, a topic he started exploring during his master's research at the Federal University of Alagoas, Brazil. He also consulted on a Stevens Initiative-Funded Project, contributing to survey validation and analysis to understand global challenges and remedies in virtual exchange initiatives for marginalized regions.

Earlier in his career, Josmario was awarded a full scholarship by the Brazilian Government to study at the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee (UWM), enhancing his international perspective and expertise in information technology. At NEES, Brazil, he was involved in projects including gamified intelligent tutoring systems and linked data applications to support teachers. At Systemic Bilingual, a leading bilingual education program in Brazil, he contributed to enhancing e-learning platforms, focusing on AI for video and facial expression analysis with a variety of web-based technologies.
