IET examines ways to go beyond current technology and uses by considering open options alongside the provisions that are part of the OU’s virtual learning environment. IET works with other stakeholders to help The Open University understand the role it can take as a developer of its own technology, as well as adopting proprietary and open technologies. IET focuses on understanding how these options can benefit its processes, students and other learners.
The Future Learning Systems programme has four thematic areas:

Innovating the VLE
IET offers strengths in pedagogic understanding, working towards agreed strategy and applying skills in evaluation and reflection. Activities include:
- evaluating VLE tools and alternatives (ePortfolio, Elluminate, Second Life),
- working with innovation pilots,
- online tutoring models
Design
IET is extending work on OU Learning Design Initiative (OULDI) to understand the impact of learning design on learners and on the processes of The Open University. We use Cloudworks within the OU and examine models of learning as well as design. Activities include:
- developing a common basis across learning, technology and business models,
- establishing projects across the University to apply learning design in practice,
- supporting these with appropriate tools and guidance
Openness
IET is linking with work on Open Educational Resources (OERs) and use of open technologies. This strand will explore the value of adopting an open approach for the OU learning environment to bridge students between modules, bring in new learners and draw on open resources. Activities include:
- exploring open models of learning,
- working with OER projects such as the Open Learning: Bridge to Success (NGLC funded project),
- analysing impact of mobile technologies (see mobile connections),
- drawing on results from research on “Net Generation” approaches to learning
- partner in the openEd 2.0 project: applying principles of open source communities to 'open-up' the OU's module 'Practice-based Research in Educational Technology'.
- partner in the openSE project: open educational framework for computer science software engineering
Green learning
IET is establishing a new priority area to review the green value of distance and online learning to help the OU take an appropriate position regarding climate change initiatives. Once green methods have been identified, IET will help to support roll-out and move towards a future view of the OU as a green, accessible and innovative provider of learning opportunities. Activities include:
- examining the impact of distance learning on the environment,
- identifying green approaches,
- establishing links with external activity on green ICT,
- building towards a future where the OU is recognised as a provider of green learning
