The Open University has licensed the CIO Executive Council Pathways competency framework, which allows future CIOs to follow a clearly devised learning plan, from IT staff to Board level. The framework is mapped to The Open University’s extensive online industry curriculum to provide future Chief Information Officers with the essential skills required to reach Board status.
This diagram below illustrates which competencies must be developed to achieve high levels of performance in each successive IT role on the journey to the Future-State CIO. For each role, the bubbles indicate a significant change in level of behaviour for that competency — the larger the bubble, the more significant the change. Only the competencies that must change with each role are shown; prior competencies remain important.
