Tim Lewis is currently a Lecturer in French at the Open University and a member of the INTELLECT (INdependent and Technology Enhanced Learning of Languages and CulTures) Research Group. He holds a B.A. Joint Honours Degree in German and French (Class 1)and a Ph.D in Comparative Liteature from the University of London, as well as an M.A in Applied Linguistics from the University of Reading. As founding Director of the Modern Languages Teaching Centre of the University of Sheffield (1993-2001) Tim pioneered the integration of Tandem Learning into the curriculum of UK Higher Education and raised more than £210,000 in external funding for a range of innovative projects, from both UK and European Bodies. Tim is also a qualified Translator and Interpreter working regularly on a freelance basis, for South Yorkshire Police, as well as Courts in South Yorkshire.
Tim's research interests embrace most aspects of university language teaching. His current activity and publication focuses especially on computer-mediated communication (esp. audiographic conferencing), telecollaboration (tandem learning), learner and teacher autonomy, intercultural learning, and individual learner variation (motivation, affect, strategy use).
