Working with Substance Misuse

Skills for Care and Skills for Health have been working collaboratively with awarding organisations to develop a range of qualifications on the Qualification Credit Framework to replace NVQs.  The new Level 3 Diploma replaces the NVQ Level 3 in Health and Social Care.

The Level 3 Diploma is a wide ranging diploma with built-in flexibility to suit all fields of health and social care. This is the main qualification required by the Quality Care Commission in England and the Care Councils in Wales and Northern Ireland.

This Level 3 Diploma with an Alcohol and Substance Misuse specialism has been developed by VQAC in collaboration with the Federation of Drug and Alcohol Professionals (FDAP). It enables learners to obtain the diploma with a choice of optional units specialising in working with substance misuse.

If learners are new to the sector or don’t already hold a relevant Level 3 qualification they should ideally take this diploma before moving onto the Award or Certificate.

The Level 3 Award and Level 4 Certificate qualifications are relevant for workers both in statutory and voluntary specialist substance misuse services. As with the Diploma, VQAC have worked with FDAP to identify the mandatory units required in both qualifications.

These qualifications are approved for use in England, Wales and Northern Ireland; they are recognised by regulators and workforce development organisations for the sector and have recently been extended until December 2013.
