What?
The FlexiLearn Bite is a short introductory exercise built around a short film, audio clip or set of pictures. Learners are asked to watch or listen to the materials and then answer and reflect on a set of tailor-made questions. Suggested commentary is supplied as part of the 'Bite' materials, so learners can compare their answers and discussions to those suggested by the authors.
Who?
The 'Bite' can be studied alone, but is most effective when it is used as the basis for a group discussion or group learning exercise held either in the workplace or at your local UNISON branch. When studying the bites together, you can discuss and debate the points you have seen raised in the clip. This will encourage you to engage with the materials and with your colleagues, as well as giving you practice in the skills of active listening, constructing an argument and expressing your views.
Why?
The Bite is perfect for anyone looking to get a taste of what university level learning is like. It is a straightforward exercise that gets learners used to working with materials presented in different media formats and encourages the development of active listening and discussion skills. When used as the basis for a discussion group it provides the ideal forum for learners to practice and develop their reflection and debating skills and as such provides a shared learning experience that can help promote effective team working.
How?
These sessions can easily be organised and chaired by UNISON members, Union Learning Representatives or Branch Education Co-ordinators. All you will need is a computer and internet connection so that you can access the materials via this website and other related sites that you will be directed to (such as iTunes U and YouTube).
