Globalising Care Economies and Migrant Workers

Dr Nicola Yeates, Director of CCIG's Mobilities Programme, has completed a major work with Globalising care economies and migrant workers: explorations in global care chains (2009 on Palgrave). This book combines theoretical innovation with systematic empirical substance to explore the contours and dynamics of a major global social phenomenon – the globalization of reproductive labour. Grounded in careful historical analysis, the book offers important insights into key actors and networks in contemporary globalization processes. Nicola Yeates expands the traditional focus of global care chain analysis on domestic workers to also examine the international migration of professional nurses and religious care workers and the part they play in forging the ‘new’ global reproductive economy. Covering an impressive range of countries in Europe, Asia, the Middle East, Africa and the Americas, this innovative interdisciplinary analysis of a major global phenomenon of our time is an essential text in migration, social welfare, globalization and gender studies.
