Role

The key role of the CIO is to deliver the current and future core IT systems to underpin the University’s ambitions and to provide effective services for its customers and staff.

The role encompasses day-to-day operational service delivery and systems development & maintenance. However the crucial aspect is working with colleagues across the University to understand their objectives and to create an IT strategy and capability to enable them to be successful.


Career

David joined The Open University in August 2010. He was previously the Chief Technology Officer for Directgov, the UK government’s website for citizens, and a member of the government’s CTO Council. He has also held IT Director and Managing Director positions in the insurance and financial services sector, delivering services for Marks and Spencer, HSBC, RAC and many other high street brands as well as ComparetheMarket.com

He has led the creation of award-winning systems, including the UK’s first real-time internet banking service, and was a finalist in the British Computer Society's IT Director of the year awards after being proposed by his team.
