Working for social justice in higher education
The Centre for Inclusion and Curriculum was formed in August 2010, from The Open University’s (OU) Centre for Outcomes Based Education (COBE) and Centre for Widening Participation (CWP).
The Centre for Inclusion and Curriculum currently supports the OU in:
- Delivering innovative approaches to the development of learning, teaching and student support by creating accessible entry routes for all who want to realise their potential
- Enabling large numbers of students from diverse backgrounds to enter higher education via Openings. Openings is a suite of introductory level modules designed to increase confidence, develop study skills and stimulate excitement for learning. These modules use innovative approaches to learning, teaching and student support.
- Managing the OU’s Open Programme – one of the most flexible programmes of study in the UK that enables students to build a qualification that suits personal interest, meets career needs or both
- Enabling students to begin studying at the Open University and then go on to complete their degree at full-time conventional universities via the ground-breaking Open plus programme.
- Promoting good practice in widening participation, curriculum development and social inclusion in higher education, in collaboration with a wide network of internal and external partners. This currently includes projects on employability, staff development and recognizing achievement.
- Providing a focus for the development and monitoring of research and scholarship activity undertaken as part of the University's Widening Participation Strategy.
